Autonomous Monsters

My Autonomous Monsters series draws upon 19th century natural history illustration and sea monsters scrawled in the corners of old maps. Using natural wood grain to call forth subconscious shapes and faces, I then render the forms with wood stains and colored pencil. The result is a tangle of expressive creatures that seem to exist in a realm of floating forms and infinite space.
